Flip chart or board, bell.
Instructions
Invite children to walk around the room imagining that they are late for something.
Ring a bell and ask them to pause, then feel their feet on the ground.
Invite children to walk around again, then ring the bell once again.
Ask the children to pause, feel their feet on the ground, and then feel their breath rising in their belly (they can put their hands on their belly to help recognise the sensation).
On the last round, when you ring the bell, ask the children to:
PAUSE.
Feel their FEET on the ground.
Feel their BREATHING, then…
Feel the WEATHER inside, meaning how they are feeling.
Invite anyone who wants to share what their weather is like inside.
Teacher Notes
You can use a flip chart with the FBW acronym to make it more memorable.
Make sure children understand that their ‘weather inside’ is a way of describing how they feel and that all weather is needed, acceptable and important.
Ask questions to see if they get it:
How might you be feeling if you have stormy weather inside?
How might you be feeling if your weather inside is hot and sunny?
If you’re feeling really excited, what might your weather inside be?
Remind them that whatever weather they are feeling is ‘fine’.
Encourage children to be with whatever weather is there.
